Thanksgiving

By Luis F. Brizuela Cruz

Much has transcribed since that moment when an outcast group of people self deported from their homelands, crossed the perilous Atlantic Ocean and landed at a strange place called Plymouth Rock. Their arduous journey, filled with unimaginable uncertainty, emotional and physical hardship and the ambivalence of human behavior under stress, ultimately led to the creation of the most formidable concept of human society ever conceived. Imperfect were they and imperfect the fruit of their toil, yet a nation was born, grew and transformed, as decades and centuries passed. Such nation became the beacon of hope and purpose for all humanity and there is a yearly celebration that pays tribute to such noble accomplishment.

As we gather ourselves in the only American holiday that remarkably still preserves a nature of unanimity in the consensus of the three hundred plus million legal and illegal inhabitants of the land, it should be a day to behold the magnificence of the complete American experience. Despite its transitional moments of relative failure through history, when many may have seen their country in danger of demise, the American spirit, propelled by some formidable dynamics or divine intervention, has always managed to prevail and overcome every challenge along the way.

Today’s challenges are more complex and diverse in nature. In addition to the traditionally envious and vindictive enemies and adversaries, new forces have also afflicted the heart of the nation from within. These forces today manifest themselves by ways of apathy, dependency and selfishness.  Equivocated ideologies presently aspire and conspire to convert the successful way of the nation into a socialist experiment, where rights are demanded and responsibilities abandoned –a formula that inevitably can only bring destruction and sorrow to all.

Let us pause this Thursday for the act of Thanksgiving and take the opportunity to hope that somewhere along the way, in a not so distant future, our condescending leaders and fellow “new” Americans would begin to see that a return to the fundamentals of a once great society is the only hope to save our country from extinction. Hard work, self-reliance and unselfishness are the only ingredients to find our way back to greatness and continue to be thankful for the nation we are.thanksgiving-images
